NASMM Now Accepting Nominations for 2018 Board of Directors
NASMM continues to grow and thrive as a result of thoughtful guidance and effective leadership provided by the current and past Boards of Directors. Their collective vision and dedication have helped consumers and senior living providers identify NASMM as the voice of Senior Move Management®.

The NASMM Board of Directors is a governing board — not a managing board. The NASMM Board is not involved in the day-to-day management and operations of NASMM. The NASMM Staff is responsible for association management and operations, as well as membership management, program and service development and implementation. Anyone considering a NASMM Board position must be a "big picture" thinker, along with committing to some time and travel, and ongoing communication with other Board Directors and association staff.

Seniors Are a Huge Market but Stop Trying to Scare Them into Buying
Not that long ago, a fear-based marketing strategy for seniors made sense. With the digital era on the rise, companies began developing products to help seniors stay safe. When it came to marketing, we often saw brands capitalizing on older adult's fear of life threatening situations, including a fall, loss of memory or motor skills, or other health related issues like a stroke or heart attack. Fear can be an effective motivator.

You Will Not Believe What Resident Photos and Videos Are Proven to Have the Highest Impact
Quite some time ago I came across this YouTube video of a woman playing cards in an assisted living community. It was memorable in that she was wearing one of those oxygen nasal cannulas. She was so animated and laughing with her cards that she made me laugh along with her. The oxygen tube across her face made me like her even more. As hard as I've tried to find that video again, I've never been able to.

The Cruelty of Calling Older Adults 'Sweetie' or 'Honey'
Writer Ceridwen Dovey didn't think it would be difficult to write a novel from the point of view of a man in his late 80s. Dovey, a 30-something novelist, concocted a generic old man who was crabby and computer illiterate. Another main character was an eccentric old woman who wore magenta-colored turbans and handed out safe-sex pamphlets. But as Dovey wrote last year in The New Yorker, her effort revealed the problem with assumptions. After reading her first draft, an editor inquired, "But what else are they, other than old?"
What a great question. Read more.

Mother's Final, Best Lesson: Part 1
In 1991, my mother was found to have cancer. Her right breast was removed and when the nice ladies from a cancer survivors' group came 'round with implant information, Mom thanked them and shooed them away. "What do I need breasts for," she said. "I'm 74, not 24." Tough old bird, right? Just you wait.
