Ignite Presentation Submissions Due November 30!
Consider being part of an innovative and exciting learning format — NASMM 2019 Ignite — a showcase of five-minute talks that might be bold, possibly brash, maybe even brilliant — but never boring! It's the learning format that's fast, fun, and focused where each speaker gets 20 slides, auto-advancing every 15 seconds, for 5 minutes total.

The international Ignite motto is "enlighten us, but make it quick!" Thus, Ignite is storytelling more than presenting. Given five minutes to speak with brief visual aides, what would you share with other SMMs? What would you most like to learn from your colleagues? Would you tell a humorous story? Teach a hack? Explain your passion for an unusual hobby?

NASMM 2019 Ignite is taking place during NASMM 2019 on Sunday, March 10. Are you up for the challenge? Submissions are due by Friday, November 30, 2018! Click here to submit your Ignite proposal.

What Media Content is Most Influential (or Meaningful?) to Boomers?
The media can tell you what to think about but not what to think.
That sentence paraphrases a famous mass media theory called "agenda setting" that was established in the late 1960s, and debunks an idea that media has a strong and powerful effect on audiences. I think this is an especially apt way to think about how media affects baby boomers. Consider the fact that they were becoming adults at a time when they realized authority — be it the Johnson and Nixon administrations, Madison Avenue or their parents — needed to be questioned. I like to think that boomers were the first generation of truly critical media consumers.

Silver is the New Gold
If you've reached a certain age in life, you probably don't like to think of yourself as old. You've got a lot of company. People 50 and over are 40 percent of the U.S. population and growing. Advertisers are clueing in to the idea that silver can mean gold — if they get the message right. For decades, 59-year-old photographer David Harry Stewart has made a living taking pictures for glossy magazines and national brands. A few years back, he started to notice that the ad people commissioning his work were half his age. "What they're going to do is market to the people they know best. Themselves," Stewart said during a photo shoot at his loft in downtown Los Angeles. Stewart asked why he wasn't taking pictures of people who looked like him.

Do Older Patients Want to Talk About Life Expectancy?
Family physicians care for patients of all ages, and many say it's that cradle-to-grave concept that draws them to the specialty. However, talking with patients about life expectancy can be difficult for even the most seasoned primary care physicians. This reluctance is seen even as clinical practice guidelines increasingly urge physicians to incorporate life expectancy into decisions about preventive care for older adults.

When Excess Becomes Abundance
This table full of necklaces is amazing, isn't it? But the excess of it is a bit shocking. Sometimes a very large quantity of something, whatever that something is, is daunting and problematical to deal with. And sometimes that same excess can be seen as abundance, as plenty, as a bounty of riches. I was having difficulty seeing the upside of this huge quantity of jewelry. In our book and in our many blog posts, we suggest downsizing to rid ourselves of excess, to have fewer things, to streamline. We give this advice, as most people do, because we look at excess as a negative. And we stand by our recommendation to declutter because having too many things can get in the way of living our best lives. Yet there is abundance in excess.
