NASMM Cancels 2021 Conference
The last several months have been incredibly challenging for everyone. We have all encountered situations we couldn't have imagined just five months ago. These are times unlike any other and they have tested all of our souls. You have worked extremely hard to keep your older adult clients and staff members safe. We're happy to say NASMM has come through this challenge in a solid way — thus far. We have a long way to go, however, before the COVID-19 virus is truly defeated.

After weeks of research and deliberation (and plenty of restless nights), we have decided — with heavy hearts — to proactively cancel NASMM 2021 in Charlotte, NC next March.

Here are just a few of the issues we considered:

  • Our attendees are primarily of Baby Boomer+ age. Thus, we and our clients are among the most vulnerable to this virus.
  • The hotel's ability to safely host our meeting within social distancing guidelines is doubtful.
  • The meetings and convention industry has not published best-practices for hosting in-person meetings. (So we need to know more to protect you.)
  • Large gatherings are currently not permitted anywhere within the US, and we don't anticipate a significant change in the coming months.
  • A second wave of this virus, possibly more severe, is expected this fall/winter.
  • We do not expect that 400 members would travel by plane for an optional event until much later in 2021 or 2022.
  • We are uncomfortable with asking our members to attend the annual conference so soon after many SMMs experienced lengthy shut-downs and lost revenue.

Our top priority in all of our decision-making is the health and safety of our attendees, industry partners, and speakers. COVID-19's massive impact on all in-person events is truly unprecedented. NASMM is excited to offer a virtual symposium later this year and another next year!

We are so fortunate that NASMM 2020 in Houston went off without a hitch just prior to the national emergency in mid-March. While nothing will replace our wonderful annual conference, we hope you understand and support this difficult decision to postpone our next in-person gathering until 2022. We'll miss the buffets, cocktail parties, late-night conversations, and hugs, but we must not compromise our collective safety.

More information on NASMM's Virtual Symposium 2020 will follow later this summer, and please also watch for details on NASMM 2022 later this year.

NASMM Offers Private Facebook Group — NASMM: Donate, Keep or Sell?
During our "That's a Wrap" earlier this month, the group suggested NASMM develop a private Facebook group where members can post photos of a client's items to help locate a resource for sale and/or donation or to help determine value.

The Group is called NASMM: Keep, Donate or Sell?

Please click here to join the group. Upon approval, you'll be able to post photos, offer advice to members who've posted photos, etc. (Note: This group should not to be used for questions about operations, marketing, client services etc. Those posts should continue to be shared in the Community Forum.)

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you on our new Facebook group!
