MASTER CLASS: THIS CHAIR ROCKS: HOW AGEISM WARPS OUR VIEW OF LONG LIFE

Ashton Applewhite
Friday, March 10 — 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM

We may think we know what lies ahead: a grim slide into depression, dementia, and dependence. But that's just the party line, and author and activist Ashton Applewhite debunks it in spades.

Part monologue, part consciousness-raiser, This Chair Rocks dispels myth after myth about late life and proposes an alternative to worrying about getting old: wake up to the ageist messages that frame two thirds of our lives as decline, cheer up, and push back. It's time to work together to make discrimination on the basis of age as unacceptable as any other prejudice.

Author and activist Ashton Applewhite has been recognized by the New York Times, National Public Radio (NPR), and the American Society on Aging as an expert on ageism. Ashton blogs at This Chair Rocks, speaks widely, has written for Harper's and Playboy, and is the voice of Yo, Is This Ageist? The author of This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism, Ashton is a leading spokesperson for the movement to mobilize against age discrimination.

MASTER CLASS: A CANDID CONVERSATION ABOUT JOB-SHARING WITH OTHER SMMs

Saturday, March 11 — 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM

Job sharing — splitting a long distance senior move between two or more Senior Move Management companies — will continue to expand as our profession flourishes. Do you fear your client in Florida will not receive the same exceptional service you provide in Massachusetts? Do you struggle with who takes the lead and who communicates with the client? Do you worry about how other Senior Move Managers will assess your business skills?

Should you send a quick email to the NASMM E-List, requesting help when and where you need it? Should you actually interview the other Senior Move Managers who respond? How will the client's contract work — yours, mine or ours? Can we make what looks good on paper work in reality?

Our panel of experienced Senior Move Managers, who routinely share long distance move jobs, will explore successful processes for planning ahead, coordinating with the client, overseeing third party providers (movers, realtors, senior living communities, etc.) and executing the move.

Discover effective systems for communicating and sharing information. Find out how to manage expectations — with each other, the client, and the client's family. Hear the "hits and misses" of real life job share experiences. Learn from seasoned SMMs who've established tried-and-true strategies and "best practices" through multiple job share moves!
